Under my Hood

I just bought the car about two weeks ago and the kid before stripped a lot out of the car for weight reduction and I am no racer I just like the way the car handles and looks, so first let me tell you I know absolutely nothing about cars beyond fixing a flat, checking the fluids...get the idea, so I have been slowly learning on how to do things out of a Chilton book like how to install a whole entire windshield wiper system....but anyways lets get to the point. Last night I was driving and had been for about 20 minutes and I pull up to a stop signal and noticed smoke from my car so i look at my temp gauge and its off the charts (I don't know how long it had been over heating) so I pull off the road into a gas and popped the hood to a face full of smoke....the radiator back up reservoir doesn't have a tube in it which i just found out about last night so i couldn't gauge the radiator by that so i let the car sit for some time say 20 maybe 30 minutes and decide to go and take the radiator cap off to see what happens so i grab a rag to protect from the steam pressure built up, but to my surprise when I turned the cap nothing happened so i was like $hit...so decide to get some water into the radiator asap so I start to pour hot water into the radiator and its going in just fine then it starts to spew a little bit so i continue to pour then all of a sudden it starts shooting steam out like crazy so i wait until the subsides then i continue to play the pour some water into the radiator till it starts to shoot steam then wait until it stops and pour more water game until finally after about 45 minutes of this the radiator is full. so I put the cap on half way close the hood and drove it home with no further problems. so i get up this morning and ask my car wizard friend what to do he tells me to checked for leaks...there are none, then he said depending on how hot the car got i may have blew the head gasket so i check my oil and there is no water in it. any ideas on what the problem is? and what to do to fix it......? or should I just take it to a shop and have them do everything...

Sounds like the car may have been low on coolant from the get go.  Either the coolant system was never topped of correctly or you do have some type of leak.  If not external like: radiator, radiator hoses, bypass hoses, heater core, etc, then possibly internal: head gasket or worse.  The best thing to do is to have a knowledgeable mechanic with the tools to inspect and test for these conditions.  Not a bad idea to have Scotty at Collective Auto take a look at it and assest what the problem is.  It could also be something like a radiator fan motor, temp switch, stuck thermostat but that is why you need an expert to look at it.  Good Luck!

Maybe someone forgot to add coolant after the swap and you have been driving it around like its an air cooled.
